Improving search engine rankings requires more than just a basic understanding of search engine optimization and online marketing techniques. Some websites use best practices and others use black hat techniques. The reality is tried and true SEO is the best way to have lasting search engine success.
For anyone starting online, know that effective search engine optimization begins with website design. I'm often asked by new webmasters what they can do to improve their websites rankings. The first place I look, before responding is their website design. Does it follow best practices for SEO and is it designed in a way that makes it easily navigated.
When thinking about SEO you need to consider how search engine spiders view your web pages. They review your site in a manner that is part human part machine. Does your website have the proper flow, code, and emphasis it needs to stand out among billions of other web pages? Search engine optimization is the practice of giving the search engines exactly what they want.
Where to begin. If you want to rank on top, you must begin with addressing the fundamental needs of search engines, the human side. Is your site easy to read, understand, and access? By addressing these areas first, the technical aspects of SEO become simple to understand.
The technical components. Once you understand the purpose of SEO and your aim, the next step is to review the technical aspects of your website. Are you using the proper meta tags, keywords density, and navigational elements? Are you including your keywords in the beginning of your page, the end? The technical components are many but can be addressed systematically.
Once your site is fully optimized from a technical perspective its time to focus on building links to your website. This can be done through dozens of different techniques but needs to accomplish the same goal, building links to your website.
There are a variety of methods for building in bound links. The best kind of links are one-way links. There are also reciprocal links where individuals exchange links between sites but they rarely have the impact of one-way links. Work out a strategy for building links and put them into place one at a time. Developing links effectively will improve your ranking.
Focus on both the human side of SEO and the technical side. By thinking like search engines and then focusing on the technical components of SEO, you can achieve top rankings.
