Search Engine Optimisation - An SEO Consultant's Advice on the Basics

Any new online business owner or website owner needs to know search engine optimisation in order to drive and serious traffic to their site. In order to do this you are going to need to understand the basics of SEO. I have been an SEO consultant for 6 years and want to give you a very basic insight into what you need to do in order to optimise your site from start to finish.

The first step is always going to be identifying your keywords. Use the Google AdWords keyword tool to help you find the main keywords searched for that are relevant to your product or service. You should be looking to collect 10 - 15 high relevancy and high traffic keywords.

Once you have these keywords in play your SEO efforts need to change to focusing on building a decent size keyword list. You should use all your main keywords to find different variations. These keywords will be used in the body of your website content, the main 10 - 15 keywords need to be used in your page URL's and tags.

OK it is time to implement these keywords into your site. The main 10 - 15 need to be placed in your URL, title tag, heading tags and Meta tags. You should also consider using them in the ALT attribute if you have images on your page.

The keyword variations need to be used in the body of your main content. Try to keep them dense in the first 100 words of your site, however not so dense that it looks spammy. The average keyword density for a site should be between 3 - 8 percent.

Now as a final on page factor you need to ensure you site has no usability problems or visibility problems. Submit you site to Google webmaster tools and manually check your site for broken links. Ensure that all you pages can be found no more than 3 levels from the home page or 3 link clicks from the home page.

Your biggest challenge is going to be off page optimisation and building quality backlinks to your site. You can article market, send out press releases, become involved in communities within your niche leaving your link in comments or you could simply ask other webmasters. However there are 3 important aspects to remember when building links. One, make sure the link is from a relevant page, two make sure it is from a page with a high PageRank and three, ensure you anchor your text with your main keywords. This all creates relevance and helps Google list your site under the correct keywords.

SEO is a waiting game even for an SEO consultant. The skills required to perform effective search engine optimisation will take time to learn and understand, however there is lot's of free info available online and through SEO communities.

Your Web Page Title, often referred to as your page Title Tag, is a very important factor to consider when optimizing your website to achieve high Google rankings. Get your Page Title Tags right and it is really going to help you get that 1st Page Google ranking.

You would probably look at the titles printed on the spines of the books until you see the one that looks relevant to what you are searching for, you then look inside the book to see if it matches exactly what you need.

This is very similar to how Google works. First of all someone searches a keyword on Google e.g. Golf Balls. Google looks at all the web pages in its database that have the words 'Golf Balls' in the Page Titles (or as in our analogy - spines). If the web pages do not have the words Golf Balls in the Page Titles then it would be a major problem. You need to make it as easy as possible for Google to find your pages.

There are other factors Google uses, but you want to make your site as obvious as possible to Google when someone is searching for what you offer.

So, by putting your keywords in the Page Title the site stands a very good chance of getting listed when that term is searched.

Web Hosting and SEO - Search Engine Optimization

We have seen many organizations completely ignore Search Engine Optimization (SEO) when considering a hosting package, web hosting and SEO should be a key consideration in the selection process. SEO is an important step in creating a website and should should be taken into serious consideration before you even begin to build your website, one of the considerations here is hosting.

Country Specific Domain NamesIf the majority of all of your customer base is located for example in the UK, then you should get hosting in the UK - get your own UK hosting here. However if your server is located in the US for example you can still localize your domain to improve rankings on Google UK search.

Staying on the example of serving a customer base largely or complete based in the UK using a TLD: .co.uk tells search engines that your are indeed based in the UK. Even having a .co.uk domain name and a server hosting your website in Germany or the US having that crucial .co.uk is a strong enough statement.

However don't be tricked into typing 'UK Web Hosting' into Google and going with the first result as some UK Web Hosting companies actually have servers based overseas and with the combination of a .com domain name your chanced of appearing in the Google UK search from the web and pages from the up is limited.

In an ideal world in this scenario you should have reliable hosting in the UK and a .co.uk domain name, however there are ways around it if you do not. If you are based in the UK and own a .com and not .co.uk, you could purchase .co.uk TLD and forward your .com to the .co.uk however there is risk in this if you site has build up a good reputation and has a strong back link campaign and high page rank. You can always try to localize your domain. But in conclusion to rank in a regional specific area you either need hosting in your country or a local TLD e.g. .co.uk, you don't necessarily need both.

Avoid Cheap Web Hosting - consider both web hosting and seo ...

Simply knocking up a quick website, rushing the design, back end coding and on site search engine optimization and finally whacking it onto the cheapest server you find is not going to deliver any success at all, if you are serious about creating a professional authoritative website then you really needs to invest wisely in web hosting. As mentioned above why attract unwanted visitors from unwanted locations.

Sometime cheap hosting companies will offer ridiculous amount of free space, however this can have an adverse effect on down time, and this means that your website may not always be available upon request. This not only has a knock on effect on SEO but also website usability as it may cause problems for website visitors to visit your website when they want to, what is worth adding here also is if search engine spiders cannot access your website and follow links throughout your site this will obviously have an effect on your SEO campaign. Again some webhosts that offer cheap hosting use a method where your domain is redirect to the back of another Website. This can cause problems with the search engines reaching your website and website content. I have also found that some cheap hosting providers host sites that have been banned from the search engines; this of course will have more than a negative effect on search engine rankings.

Avoid Hosting Multiple Domains on the Same Server

Yes it does seem very tempting to buy server space and hosting more than one domain. Let's just say that search engines e.g. Google may frown upon this type of behavior. Search Engines may believe that the company hosting these multiple domains is attempting to artificially link together hence trying to manipulate search engine with the objective of increase rankings in the search engine results pages. However this can and often does results in a decrease in SERP rankings. SEO Fundamentals - Top 20 Factors to Better Google Rankings

Any discussion about SEO Fundamentals needs to start with Google. With over 75% of the world's web searches now being conducted via Google, it's safe to say that your potential customers will be starting their journey there as well.

Google is the gold standard of Search Engines in both overall search volume and search quality. I'll save the rationale behind Google's dominance for another day, but undoubtedly a large portion of their rise to the top of Search Engine excellence can be attributed to their proprietary algorithm, which is the set of calculations performed against the web's content that decides which web sites they think their viewers will find most relevant for the entered keywords.

Google's is the most difficult search engine to optimize against because it does the best job of filtering out all of the short-cuts marketers try to use to cheat the system. Google makes a company work to return high organically. At the most basic of Google's (and hence, SEO's) driving factors to page rank are:

* How much relevant content does your site have, and

* How highly the web community values your content (measured in number of links from other sites to your content).

This means that the early days of tweaking a few meta tag descriptions to fix your web site's SEO are long, long gone. In today's game, SEO cannot be thought of as a one-time expense. It requires a commitment. Based on your competition, your industry and your objectives, it may also require a good deal of time and money before you see results. 7. Quality/Relevance of Links to External Sites/Pages - Do links on the page point to high quality, topically-related pages?

8. Age of Document - Older pages may be perceived as more authoritative while newer pages may be more temporarily relevant.

9. Amount of Indexable Text Content - Refers to the literal quantity of visible HTML text on a page.

10. Quality of the Document Content (as measured algorithmically) - Assuming search engines can use text, visual or other analysis methods to determine the validity and value of content, this metric would provide some level of rating.

11. Global Link Popularity of Site - The overall link weight/authority as measured by links from any and all sites across the web (both link quality and quantity).

12. Age of Site - Not the date of original registration of the domain, but rather the launch of indexable content seen by the search engines (note that this can change if a domain switches ownership).

13. Topical Relevance of Inbound Links to Site - The subject-specific relationship between the sites/pages linking to the target page and the target keyword.

14. Link Popularity of Site in Topical Community - The link weight/authority of the target website amongst its topical peers in the online world.

15. Rate of New Inbound Links to Site - The frequency and timing of external sites linking in to the given domain.

16. Anchor Text of Inbound Link.

17. Global Link Popularity of Linking Site.

18. Topical Relationship of Linking Page.

19. Link Popularity of Site in Topical Community - The link weight/authority of the target website amongst its topical peers in the online world.

20. Age of Link.

SEO Specialists Are Not Magicians

It's frustrating when your website isn't working as well as you'd hoped it would. Finally you realise you need some help so you contact an SEO consultant.

"So..." you say..."How much will it cost to get my site to the top of Google?"

Although it might make sense to you to ask for a fixed price for a simple task like getting to the top of Google, I'd advise stopping for a moment and thinking about what you are asking. All things being equal there are several basic boxes your site needs to tick to get to the top of Google for a specific keyword or phrase. For the purpose of this exercise let's agree the keyword is competitive, i.e. it's a phrase lots of other sites want to rank for.

  1. The content of the page you think should be number one should match the search criteria. This means covering all the SEO basics.
  2. The site should be an established and trusted presence. If your site is new it's not going to be number one for a competitive phrase. You have to be patient.
  3. Your page will need lots of links from relevant sources. Links to your page suggest to the search engines it's a trusted information resource. The links should be from other trusted and relevant resources and the link or anchor text should also be relevant.

If all the above is in place and being constantly improved and developed you should be in the running. However, there's one aspect of this whole conundrum which means your place at the top can't be guaranteed.

The missing link that's hard to figure out is knowing what your competition are doing. If the phrase you are chasing is valuable then lots of other site owners will also be chasing it. What if they are doing everything you are doing, and then some? What if they are creating killer content that's attracting quality links? What if they are hiring 10 people to look for links for 8 hours a day?

All ethical SEO consultants are working hard to attract quality traffic for their clients but search engines are complex beasts. So as you embark on your SEO odyssey make sure your SEO company are being straight with you. If they are claiming a special relationship with Google that's going to take your site to the top of the SERPs ask them how they are solving the problems mentioned above.

You see that even though NoteBookReview.com is a huge technology review site, it still specializes in one are of technology.

Search engines is all about giving relevant results for a searched topic. Think about your mindset when you are going to do a search for something. You are most likely looking for one piece of information. You aren't trying to browse around a big site. You need that one piece of specialized information to satisfy your need for information. Google will not return you a "general" webpage for a "specialized" search.

It's been said that half of Google's searches are unique. Meaning no one has ever searched for the exact same term. Google is in the business of being the best at returning specialized information.

Why am I saying all of this? Quite simply your website and business have to be specialized to succeed. Your website should serve one purpose and one purpose only. Your website should be in a niche or sub-niche.

The best SEO strategy in my opinion, and experience - is a holistic white hat SEO strategy.

The dictionary definition of holistic is:

"of, concerned with, or dealing with wholes or integrated systems rather than with their parts"

Holistic SEO simply means that you work on everything, the whole system - not just parts.

Many people involved in SEO, do not work in this manner - it's not uncommon at all to find a website that has had a lot of SEO work done in parts, but the website isn't doing nearly as well as it should be due to very important parts being completely missed out.

It's very common to find websites which suffer from one of the following :

  • Great on page & off page SEO done - but keyword research not done, as a result the website is concentrating on completely the wrong keywords, and therefore ranking for keywords which do not bring targeted traffic.
  • Great offpage SEO, plently of backlinks - but complete lack of relevant content
  • Great keyword research done, good on page SEO - but no off page SEO, no backlinks, and therefore very little traffic apart from small amounts of traffic coming from keywords which have very little competition.

The best results come from SEO when done in a holistic way - paying plenty of attention to all area's, keyword research, on page, and off page. So to conclude, the best seo strategy is not a tactic or a trick, it is simply about paying attention to all of the important parts of SEO.

Top 5 Common SEO Mistakes

So you built your website, with hopes and dreams of internet riches, and the site looks great. But no one's coming to it! Then you start learning SEO, and you're feeling a little bit more confident about it. Here are a few easy mistakes that people make when learning SEO, to look out for as you start doing more SEO work for your site:

Mistake 1: Keyword Stuffing

Before explaining why it's a bad idea, let's first define keyword stuffing as overfilling your content with your targeted keywords/keyphrases. By way of example, if you're targeting the phrase "navigation system," then keyword stuffing your content might read something like "Buying a new navigation system is something most customers do regularly as their old navigation system often fails to function in the proper way that a navigation system should..." and so on. It reads like a fourth grader's essay, and the search engine spiders pick up on the unnaturally high incidence of the same phrase repeated over and over.

While every SEO expert has a different opinion about keyword density, a safe but effective range might be considered 4-9% density. This makes sure the search engines correctly categorize your site for the services you offer, without them penalizing you for blatantly stuffing it with keywords.

Mistake 2: Link Farms vs. Directories

What is the difference between a link farm and a directory? It sounds like an easy question, but it's deceptively difficult. The reason is that directories and link farms share almost everything in common, so instead of a black and white difference between the two, they basically fall on a spectrum, and usually somewhere in the grey middle area.

That said, a working definition of link farm might go something like "a page of links with no other purpose or benefit to the visitor other than to provide backlinks to other pages." And why are they a problem? Search engines will not only disregard them as useless, they will often penalize the linked sites as well, by de-indexing them or demoting them in the rankings.

So how do you tell the difference between a link farm and a directory? Here are a few things to look for: 1) What's the Google Page Rank? 2) How well organized is it? 3) Does it have useful content other than links? 4) Is it visually attractive or otherwise made to be appealing to visitors? Be sure to ask these questions before submitting your site to an online directory.

Mistake 3: Duplicate Content

There's a lot of buzz going around the internet about duplicate content; quite simply, it's the same content appearing on more than one page on the internet. The search engines have been known to devalue pages that they see as duplicates, since the implication is that a site is simply spamming by putting automated content out on the web.

However, unlike link farm penalties, duplicate content isn't actively penalized, but merely disregarded sometimes by the search engines. If you're worried about it, well, write new content!

Mistake 4: Overbidding for PPC Advertising

Pay per click advertising (PPC) and SEO are NOT the same, but they're related enough to warrant a mention here. Amateurs often overbid for their PPC advertising, which not only costs them unnecessary money but drives up PPC prices elsewhere artificially. As with so many concepts in business, start low and go slow, which in this case means opening the bidding around 5-10 cents per click, and raising your bids as necessary to achieve your desired results.

Mistake 5: Investing Too Much Time in SEO Education

Serious webmasters devoted to online businesses and internet marketing would be wise to learn as much as possible about SEO. That said, the overwhelming majority of online business owners would probably be better off using their time to expanding their client base, or developing new products or websites, rather than spending tedious hour after tedious hour learning the minutiae of SEO and internet marketing. If you're capable of earning $45/hour while aggressively working your business, and can hire someone to handle SEO for you for $20/hour, then it's a no-brainer: hire an internet marketing company and get back to running your business.

    Adjusting Permalinks For Best SEO in WordPress

    One of the best things using WordPress blogs (or any blogs) as your content management system is that they come with certain features that give them an advantage in the quest for high rankings and big traffic from the search engines.

    Unfortunately however, they still aren't perfect, and there are many steps you need to take in order to ensure that your blog and it's content are ranking as highly as you desire in the major search engines.

    Of course, high search engine rankings are a combination of both on page and off page factors. While many people work hard on getting links and building exposure through off page factors, they often overlook the most basic elements of search engine success, the on page factors.

    This article is going to look at two tips for doing everything you can to ensure high rankings for your WordPress blog and all it's content.

    Part 1: Permalinks

    The first thing you need to do if you want the most traffic possible for your WordPress blog is to adjust your permalink structure.

    The way you do this is by clicking on, in your WordPress Admin area, Settings on the left vertical menu, and then selecting Permalinks.

    You'll see a number of options:

    Default http://yourdomain.com/?p=123
    Day and name http://yourdomain.com/2009/02/15/sample-post/
    Month and name http://yourdomain.com/2009/02/sample-post/
    Numeric http://yourdomain.com/archives/123

    Options 1 and 4 have to be avoided like the plague. You MUST have your permalinks set so that the name of your post (and hopefully the keywords you're trying to target) appear inside your URL.

    Another good permalink structure to use is select CUSTOM and enter:

    /%category%/%postname%

    Again it ensures that your keywords are going to appear in the URL rather than an arbitrary, NUMBER for the name of your post.

    Part 2: Blog Post Titles

    Once that's done you're ready to move on and start creating your post. This next tip relates to when you're actually on the write post page and making your content.

    The first thing you need to do is create a quality post title. A quality blog post title is one that both appeals to your readers and satisfies the search engines such that they will rank your post for the keywords you want to rank for.

    So say you're writing a post that you want to target the keyword "WordPress SEO" - an appropriate title might be:

    "WordPress SEO: How To Perfectly Optimize Your Blog For Search Traffic"

    This has the keyword in the title FIRST and also has an appealing "how to" headline type statement that is exciting and appealing to a potential reader. This ensures not only that your post will rank well, but when it DOES get the rankings, it will get clicked and your site will get viewed.
